The Port Edward Golf Club sits slap bang in the middle of a marvelous collection of several renowned and up-market golf courses and tends to be overlooked because it is smaller and unassuming. Don’t make the mistake of ignoring it since it is a great economical but still enjoyable alternative to the rest. Add to that the warm welcome you’ll receive at the 19th hole and how kind those who are still new to the game are treated you can’t go wrong.
This unpretentious course provides a stiff workout because of the hilly terrain that winds up and down hill without mercy while offering little protection from the coastal winds that will wreck havoc on the best laid plans when in motion. In the dryer seasons the greens and fairways can be hard-ish but will be in superb nick in the rainy season.
Four holes have water hazards and there is a sea view from basically every tee box. One of the most memorable holes is the par 4 first that has water before the green, out of bounds on the left and right and a bunker at the back left. At the par 3 straight downhill 5th hole with a gorgeous view of the sea, the wind will upset this seemingly easy shot. The par 5 6th hole is all uphill and will test your fitness levels. On the second shot the out of bounds on the right need to be avoided.
If the wind managed to upset your game the welcome at the famously sociable 19th hole will more than make up for it and save the day.
