My Sunburn Cure:
I burn very easily and developed this treatment for sunburn through trail and error to help me get over the painful stage of sunburn faster. I’ve shared this recipe with several people and without fail always received positive feedback about how quickly it worked.
My sunburn remedy is simple:

- Have a cool shower or bath as soon as possible after being in the sun. You want cool water, not icy cold water. Just as you would hold your finger, after burning it on the stove, under cold water, you need to do the same with your sunburn. Cool water will cool the burning down. Gently pat yourself dry after the shower.
- Dilute Apple Cider Vinegar with 50% water. If you don’t have Apple Cider Vinegar at hand regular White Vinegar can also be used. Apply lots of it to your sunburned skin so that your skin is wet. The initial slight sting will pass within seconds and the relief will be immediate. Apply repeatedly.
(If you find the idea of using Vinegar on your tender skin too off putting you will also get good results if you choose to skip this step.) - Thickly apply white (not green) Ingram’s Camphor Cream to the sunburned areas. Keep on re-applying as your skin will literally soak it up.
- Drink lots of water.
- Take aspirin or ibuprofen for the pain.
Avoid exposure to the sun until your skin is fully healed!
What is sunburn?
A sunburn is cell level skin damage from ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Skin responds to UV exposure by producing more melanin. Melanin is your skin’s natural sunblock and the source of your coloring.
When the sunburn is more that your natural sunblock (melanin) can handle sun damage will occur leaving you with a nasty sunburn to deal with.
Sunburn symptoms will usually be over and done with in a few days but the damage to skin cells is more often than not permanent.
Skin damage caused by repeated sunburns can lead to skin cancer, skin growths and lesions, a compromised immune system, premature aging and permanent eye damage later on in life.
Symptoms of Sunburn:
The telltale signs will be most visible 2-6 hours after burning and will peak at 12-24 hours. The pain will be worst at 6-24 hours after the burn.
- Redness
- Swelling
- Soreness and pain
- Skin feels warm
- Headache
- Sunburn rash
- Sunburn itch
- Peeling
- Blistering
- Fever
A very bad sunburn may cause second degree burns, dehydration (causing electrolyte imbalances), infection, shock and death. See a doctor if you have a severe sunburn.
Sunburn rash
One of the symptoms of sun damage is what is called a sun rash or sun poisoning. It is called PMLE or polymorphous light eruption.
A skin rash appears soon after sun exposure (usually within 30 minutes up to a few hours later) and will look like a mild to very bad bumpy rash. It usually itches like crazy.
Symptoms of a skin rash:
- Smallish bumps all over the body but mainly in the sunburned areas.
- It starts with just a few bumps and progresses to dense clumps of bumps.
- Some people will also develop hives on their chest, arms and lower legs.
Sunburn Itch
Although is isn’t clear what happens to the skin during a itchy sunburn episode we do know:
- It is more common among fair skinned people,
- It affects 10-15% of the population,
- Usually shows up 24 to 72 hours after sun exposure.
It is sometimes called Hell’s Itch because of the intensity. It is described as a deep, throbbing and continuous torment that is hard to treat.
Remedies that might bring relief:
- Taking a hot shower,
- Peppermint oil,

How to prevent sunburn
Apply generous amounts of SPF 30 sunscreen (or SPF 50 if you are very light skinned) to all exposed areas and repeat every hour you are in the sun. Don’t forget your ears and lips!
This is a must do even on a cloudy day.
Wear protective clothing like a wide brimmed hat, long sleeved shirts and sunglasses that offer protection from UV rays.
Limit the time you spend in the sun and rather gradually built your tan over time by spending short periods in the sun for a few days.
