The course at the Wild Coast Sun Golf Club
Robert Trent Jones Jr., world renowned golf course architect, outdid himself when designing this special course. Putting the rugged undulating terrain with breathtaking views over the Indian Ocean to its best use, you get to experience a very challenging but pleasurable course on a good day. When the coastal wind picks up you are in for an extraordinary challenge and an immensely gratifying round of golf whether you are an amateur or professional golfer.
The wide fairways, huge greens and six par3’s will have you thinking you are in for an easy game but don’t be fooled. This is a daunting course with 59 bunkers protecting the greens and shots over ravines, water, waterfalls as well as the prevailing winds will test you severely. You sometimes will have to hit risky daring shots and at other times will have to plan and play with great care and restraint.
You can expect to play a dramatic shot across a waterfall as well as over ravines, rivers, lagoons, open moorland and forest areas set against the backdrop of the ever-changing seascapes. There are several signature holes but I think the par 3 13th hole is the most memorable. Hit your shot over a deep ravine with a waterfall on the right onto a green, bordered with a bunker at the back, from a choice of four different tee boxes. The wind will determine how much club to use but don’t be surprised if you lose a ball (or two) here.
The approaching par 5 12th starts off at an elevated tee to a fairway fair below that is flanked by water on the left and bunkers on the right- and excellent risk and reward par 5. The last 3 holes end you off literally and figuratively at a high; the par 3 16th is flanked by water on both sides, the par 3 17th is especially scenic and the par 4 18th demands a long drive over a lake to a sliver of fairway followed by an uphill shot to heavily bunkered green in front of the clubhouse.
Please note that using carts is a must. This is one of the best golf courses in South Africa – don’t miss playing this unique course. Every hole is special and you will find that this course will linger in your mind for a long time.
