The KwaZulu Natal ‘Golf Coast,’ as it is affectionately referred to, is one of the best kept secrets of the South African golfing community.  You’ll be spoilt for choice as each course on our list presents a multitude of differing challenges and conditions that will have the raw amateur right up to the experienced and even professional player salivating.

On offer are three of South Africa’s top ten courses as well as 8 more courses that are not only challenging but very rewarding to play.  The South Coast golf courses are located in a sub tropical paradise with the picturesque Indian Ocean as a backdrop and you will never have to go more than a hour’s drive in any direction to find the next course to play.

While you are golfing to your heart’s content your family can explore golden beaches, nature reserves, restaurants and shopping malls and take part in a variety of activities and events.  The pick of accommodation is large and varied and will be able to suit any pocket and group/family size. 

All the courses on the Golf Coast are very welcoming to visitors (but do book in advance) and from the Umkomaas Golf Club in the North to Harding Country Club (inland) in the West and The Wild Coast Sun Golf Club in the south you will find friendly and relaxed 19th holes to share tales of woe or triumphs with.

Umkomaas Golf Course on KwaZulu Natal's South Coast

Umkomaas Golf Club

This is the first golf course on the Golf Coast.  The 18 hole course offers lovely views of the sea from most of the holes as it follows the natural contours of the land surrounded by ancient indigenous trees. The raised greens and well designed bunkers makes for a great round of golf.  The par 4 third hole is known to be the most exciting stroke in KwaZulu Natal.

It has the reputation of being the friendliest club and visitors are warmly welcomed to enjoy the course as well as the clubhouse and braai facilities.  Being family friendly, weekly clinics are held for kids to learn the basics of golf.  Regular competitions are held.

Scottburgh Golf course on the KwaZulu Natal South Coast

Scottburgh Golf Club

It is a 18 hole semi-links course that offers breathtaking views of the ocean in a tropical setting.  It is relatively short at 5323 meters with 5 par 3’s, 11 par 4’s and 2 par 5’s with the average par 4 being 330 meters long. 

The semi-links with the narrowest of fairways (referred to as the ‘white knuckle hole’) and the always tricky coastal winds will ensure an exciting round of golf.  The par 4 18th is especially challenging as you fly the drive over high trees into the beyond to hopefully drop onto the fairway below. 

Visitors are welcome at this great Golf Coast course.

Selborne Park Golf Estate

The world class parkland course with its 18-holes and beautifully manicured fairways was designed by Denis Barker around one of only two privately owned coastal forests.  It is a challenging but exhilarating course that will test your abilities while you are enjoying the gorgeous sea views and glimpses of the indigenous wildlife.

The course is surrounded by a Four Star Hotel and luxury villas and was the first residential golf estate.  You will be able to enjoy fine dining, a world-class spa, conference facilities, a quaint chapel for weddings, four elegant reception venues and Barker’s Bar.  This is the ultimate golfing destination.  Please note that advance booking is necessary.

Umdoni Park Golf Club

This historic course, that boasts the landmark Botha house, was designed to be pleasurable and to challenge.  The first nine is laid out to run alongside the coast before it turns inland nestled amongst the impressive indigenous coastal forest and Umdoni trees.  Making use of a cart is highly recommended as this is a very hilly 18 hole course with many levels.

Being part of the Umdoni Trust, conservation and education are a great focus and the guided walks on offer will not disappoint.  Stay over in the imposing Botha house and watch dolphins and whales frolicking in the sea.  Visitors are welcome but do book in advance.

Port Shepstone Country Club

Dating back to 1912, this popular picturesque 18 hole course is nestled between the sea and the uMzimkhulu River.  The front nine is scenic with the fairways lined with tropical coastal forest while the back nine have a decidedly links style feel where the wind and water-traps will test your abilities.

This club is very popular among the locals and offers bowls, cricket, squash and darts as well.  Besides regularly hosting championship events, community events of all kinds are enjoyed by club members and visitors alike.   Visitors always receive a warm welcome but do book in advance to ensure your tee off time.

Harding Country Club

This country golf course is 45 minute drive from Port Shepstone set in a friendly farming town.  It is a unassuming 9 hole course but the two tee boxes at each hole makes a 18 hole round possible.  If you are looking for a relaxing round of golf in a country setting Harding should be on your golfing to-do list for the Golf Coast.

The club house often plays host to local community events and is a regular gathering place for the friendly locals.  Visitors are welcome and there are accommodation available in the vicinity if you want to extend your stay.

Margate Country Club

This 18 hole course is not only scenic but offers a good challenge in that it caters for a wide range of golfing abilities, making it very popular to both locals and visitors. You can look forward to 5 par 3’s, a 11th signature hole that requires an accurate tee shot over a picturesque ravine, water features that are a bird haven, views over the surrounding hills and excellent facilities manned by friendly welcoming staff.

Having the reputation of being the friendliest pub on the south coast, the 19th hole will surely make you feel part of the family in no-time. Visitors are welcome but do book in advance.

Southbroom Country Club

This 18 hole manicured course will not only challenge you to use every club in your bag but will ensure that you have fun.  Each of the holes has its own unique feature and the wind will make careful game planning a must.  Being right adjacent to the beach, dotted with lush greenery and surrounded with luxury coastal homes it is one of the finest golf courses on the south coast.

The Pro Shop is well stocked and will have you salivating.  The clubhouse is top notch, a popular community hub and offers gorgeous views from the covered veranda.  Visitors are welcome but you need to book in advance.

San Lameer Country Club

This world class course is set in a golfing estate and you’ll find that the facilities and carefully manicured greens are of the best.  The layout is tight and economical and is a great challenge.  The scenic fairways are narrow and the large bunkers, doglegs, many bodies of water and devilish thick rough will ensure a testing but very enjoyable round of golf.

The weather conditions can turn this course into a monster but it will only inspire you to come back for more.  This is the ideal destination to combine a picture perfect beach holiday with a memorable championship course but do book in advance as it is a very popular golf destination.

Port Edward Country Club

This is the perfect alternative if you feel like taking a break from the other courses in the vicinity.  It is more affordable to play and although seemingly unassuming, is still is a very enjoyable course to play.  It is a 9 hole course, but the double tees make it possible to play a 18 hole round of golf.  Be warned that the stiff up and down hill walks will test your fitness levels.

Water at four of the holes, the hilly undulating terrain and the merciless coastal wind will challenge even the most experienced players but sea views from every tee box will delight the senses.  The warm welcome at the 19th hole is legendary.

Wild Coast Sun Country Club

This daunting course is really special and not to be missed.  Wide fairways, huge greens, many bunkers, ravines, water hazards and even a shot over a waterfall mixed with the ever present coastal winds will make for an extraordinary challenging but hugely enjoyable round of golf and will thrill amateur but also experienced players alike.

This is one of the best golf courses in South Africa – don’t miss out on experiencing it for yourself.  Every hole is special and you will find that this course will linger in your mind for a long time.  Do book in advance as it is a very popular vacation and golf destination.
